Committee Introductions
GA1 DISEC
The First Committee of the General Assembly focuses on disarmament and international security issues facing the world, including militarization issues and threats to global peace. As a General Assembly committee, this committee is highly recommended for first-time delegates or beginner delegates who may be less familiar with global issues and MUN procedure.

GA3 SOCHUM
The Third Committee of the General Assembly focuses on social, humanitarian, and cultural issues around the world, including questions relating to the advancement of women, the protection of children, the treatment of refugees, and humans rights’ issues in general. As a General Assembly committee, this committee is highly recommended for first-time delegates or beginner delegates who may be less familiar with global issues and MUN procedure.

GA4 SPECPOL
The Fourth Committee of the General Assembly focuses on political issues and issues relating to decolonization. Originally focused specifically on decolonization, this committee now covers a wider range of topics such as nuclear energy and UN peacekeeping missions. As a General Assembly committee, this committee is highly recommended for first-time delegates or beginner delegates who may be less familiar with global issues and MUN procedure.

ECOSOC
The Economic and Social Council focuses on the economic and social aspects of sustainable development and reaching the sustainable development goals by 2030. This includes issues on trade, food security, and international cooperation. This is an excellent committee for first-time delegates or beginner delegates who are less familiar with global issues and MUN procedure.

HRC
The Human Rights Council focuses on human rights issues around the world and addresses violations to human rights and makes recommendations as to how people can be better protected. This is an excellent committee for first-time delegates or beginner delegates who are less familiar with global issues and MUN procedure.

UNESCO
The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural mission aims to protect global heritage, preserve local cultures, and advance quality education. This is an excellent committee for first-time delegates or beginner delegates who are less familiar with global issues and MUN procedure, though the topics may be slightly more niche and specialized to cultural heritage issues, and less so geopolitics.

WHA
The World Health Assembly focuses on health issues around the world, including pandemics, vaccinations, and making sure each region of the world receives adequate healthcare. This is an excellent committee for first-time delegates or beginner delegates who are less familiar with global issues and MUN procedure, though the topics may be slightly more niche and specialized to health issues, and less so geopolitics.

NATO
Though the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is not officially a United Nations committee, they collaborate closely and maintain a commitment for protecting peace and security. Established in 1949 to deter Soviet influence, following the collapse of the Soviet Union, they now discuss and act on geopolitical issues regarding North America and Europe. This committee uses UN4MUN procedure, which involves more direct debate and may be a new form of procedure for most delegates. It is recommended that delegates have at least one conference of experience before joining a UN4MUN committee.

CSW
The Commission on the Status of Women aims to promote women’s rights and is dedicated to the promotion of gender equality around the world. This committee uses the UN4MUN procedure, which involves more direct debate and may be a new form of procedure for most delegates. It is recommended that delegates have at least one conference of experience before joining a UN4MUN committee.

UNDP
The United Nations Development Programme collaborates closely with specific nations to help them eradicate poverty, focusing on achieving local capacity to create sustainable development growth. This committee uses the UN4MUN procedure, which involves more direct debate and may be a new form of procedure for most delegates. It is recommended that delegates have at least one conference of experience before joining a UN4MUN committee.

UNEA
The United Nations Environmental Assembly is a committee dedicated specifically for the environment, aiming to solve the issues of pollution, climate change, and the loss of biodiversity. This committee uses the UN4MUN procedure, which involves more direct debate and may be a new form of procedure for most delegates. It is recommended that delegates have at least one conference of experience before joining a UN4MUN committee.

SC
The Security Council is responsible for maintaining global peace and security around the world, being the only committee able to produce binding sanctions, impose sanctions, and authorize military action. Aspects of this committee such as veto powers make this committee an advanced one, requiring proper knowledge of geopolitics and country stance as well as procedure. It is also a smaller committee.

CRISIS
The Crisis Committee focuses on a specific issue that has occurred in the world, and is usually fictitious in MUN. Delegates do not pass resolutions but create operatives that shape what their nation does in times of crisis. As an advanced committee, this committee requires proper knowledge of geopolitics and country stance, but also emotional maturity. It is also a smaller committee.

ICJ
The International Court of Justice settles legal disputes submitted to it by states and provides legal advice on international issues. While this committee is slightly more advanced, it is an excellent introduction to anybody interested in international law, or even law in general. It does, however, require you to learn basic legal principles and ideas.
